As a child, my father taught me that there was nothing free in life. As I get older, I realize more and more the truth behind that statement. Just because something is free to you, doesn’t mean someone didn’t pay for it. All of us have been a recipient of something free, not realizing the cost behind that kind gesture or action. If you have a hard time thinking of an example that applies to you, let me share with you the greatest free gift of all time.
I would venture to say that at one point or another in your life, you have pondered the question, “Is there life after death? If so, what is it like?” or “Is there a Heaven and a Hell?” You may have even thought that if there was a Heaven, surely, if you were good enough, you could make it through those pearly gates. I mean after all, how else could you make it?
Some doubt Heaven or Hell’s existence, or strongly deny it. What they don’t realize is that if we, as Christians, are wrong in what we believe about Heaven and Hell, and neither place exists, than like the atheist or unbeliever, we will just float around in the cosmos after death and it doesn’t really matter. It’s a lose-lose situation no matter how you look at it. However, if the atheist or unbeliever are wrong, and Heaven and Hell does exist, and we the Christians are right after all, the unbeliever loses everything and the Christian wins. If that’s a chance you’re willing to take, that’s your decision. Psalm 53:1 – The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good.
It all boils down to one simple word. Faith. Either you have faith that Heaven and Hell exists because the Bible says they do, or you simply don’t believe. It takes more faith not to believe in God than it does to believe in God. The answer to the question above on how to make it to Heaven after you die, has absolutely nothing to do with how good of a person that you are. In fact, God says that our righteousness to Him, is as filthy rags. Isaiah 64:6 – But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags. So no matter how good we think we are, we don’t compare, even in the slightest, to God’s righteousness.
So am I saying that doing good works won’t get you into Heaven? You’re absolutely correct, they won’t. In fact, if you’re trusting in your good works, they will send you straight to hell. Here’s what God says in Ephesians 2: 8-9 – For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. So if good works won’t get you into Heaven, what will? Quite simply, you have to have your name written in the Book of Life, otherwise you will be cast into hell. Revelation 20:15 – And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
There are 3 things you must realize and 1 thing that you must do in order for your name to be written in the Book of Life.
Name in Book of Life = Heaven when you die.
First, you must realize that you, like everyone else, are a sinner. If you have ever told a lie, that makes you a liar. If you have ever stolen a piece of gum as a child, that makes you a thief. If you have ever lusted after someone, that makes you an adulterer at heart. If you have ever broken any of the Ten Commandments, you have sinned according to God. On Judgment Day, if God were to judge you according to His Law, would you be innocent or guilty? Hebrews 9:27 – And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.
Romans 3:10 – As it is written, there is none righteous, no, not one. Romans 3:23 – For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God. The Bible clearly states that 1) there is none righteous; 2) everyone has sinned. But if you really want to feel the heat, it says in Revelation 21:8 – But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. God includes lying with those who don’t believe, those who have killed someone, those who are adulterers, and those that deal with witchcraft. So you may not think you’re as bad as Adolph Hitler for killing 6 million Jews, but in God’s eyes, if you’ve even told 1 lie, you will spend an eternity in hell right alongside with those who have murdered someone in cold blood. That is damning for all of us. #guilty
Second, you must realize that there is a price that must be paid for your sin. Romans 6:23 – For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. God is holy and just, and must punish sin. Since we have sinned, the payment due for those sins is death. We must die, and we deserve to go to hell for even one violation of God’s Law. But what is this “gift of God?”
Third, the gift of God is His Son, JESUS. Romans 5:8 – But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. You see, Jesus loved you so much, that He died for you on a cross. You broke God’s Law, but Jesus paid your fine! One of the most popular verses in the Bible says in John 3:16 – For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Not only did Jesus die for you, but three days later God raised Him from the dead, giving us the victory over death and hell. We don’t have to go to hell anymore, but you must do this one thing.
Fourth, you must repent from your sin and turn to the Lord. Mark 1:15 – And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel. You must believe that Jesus died to save you, and three days later He rose from the dead. Romans 10:9 – That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. By simply confessing your sins to Jesus, asking His forgiveness, believing what He did to save you from your sins through His death, burial, and resurrection, and asking Him to save you from hell, you can receive this free gift of God. Romans 10:13 – For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. You can’t earn eternal life in Heaven. It is God’s FREE GIFT to all who humble themselves and come to Jesus. So yes, this is free to you, but Jesus paid with His life.
If you need help, you can pray something like this:
“Dear Jesus, I ask you to forgive me for my sins. I know that I have broken your Law and deserve to be judged according to your Law. I realize that you died for me on a cross and that you alone made that sin payment for me. By faith, I believe that 3 days later God raised you from the dead giving me the victory over death and hell. I ask that you would please save me, Lord Jesus, and take me to Heaven when I die.”
